Did you know?
In Western Australia, not-for-profits are eligible to apply for Lotterywest funding for Organisational Development.
Lotterwest can fund strategic, business, marketing and fundraising plans, as well as feasibility studies, the development of operating policies and procedures, training materials and board or senior staff development and mentoring.
TBH Niche advises in all these areas of organisational development.
Organisational Development

TBH Niche assists clients to increase their effectiveness through strategic planning, organisational reviews, staffing assessments, quality management assessments and organisational restructure planning.
The textbooks will tell you that organisational development is a ‘deliberately planned effort to increase an organisation’s relevance and viability’. At TBH Niche, we say that organisational development is also about thinking and acting strategically. This is the art of making decisions that are driven by a plan that comprehensively describes an organisation’s strategy and strategic objectives.
In a perfect world, small to medium businesses and not-for-profit managers would spend a good part of their day thinking about strategy and the framework for strategic decision making, but we all know that time is always at a premium. As a result, many decisions, even the most important decisions, are made for tactical advantage without full consideration of the strategic implications.
At TBH Niche, we support our clients in thinking outside the pressures of getting the day to day business through the door. We assist by directing energy towards your vision and how it should be fulfilled.
Our organisational development services include:
- Strategic planning, including board level strategic planning facilitation, drafting strategic and business plans, and advising on organisational and strategic performance measurement;
- Project feasibility studies, with a particular expertise in the health and aged care sector;
- Commonwealth and State grants and funding application writing;
- Organisational restructuring;
- Tender writing for businesses and not-for-profits;
- Stakeholder communication including annual reports writing;
- Government and decision maker liaison in relation to not-for-profit projects and services; and
- Market research, client surveying and drafting marketing plans.
Case Study 1 – COAG funding closes the gap
In 2009 the Australian and Western Australian Governments (through COAG) announced $117.43 million in extra funding over the subsequent four years to Close the Gap in Aboriginal disadvantage. TBH Niche worked with our client, an Aboriginal health services provider, on a suite of measures to address gaps in services for Aboriginal people that could be funded by COAG. After a comprehensive gap analysis and surveying of clients and stakeholders, we drafted COAG funding applications that resulted in additional funding of more than $16 million from the State and Commonwealth governments.
Case Study 2 – Alcohol and drug service back on track
Our client, a not-for-profit that delivers programs to address the harm caused by alcohol and drug use, felt it had lost its way. Staff turn over was at an all time high and morale was at an all time low. An energetic new Board and CEO decided to reinvigorate its organisation and contracted TBH Niche to assist with an organisational restructure and strategic plan. We conducted a series of interviews with staff and a number of workshops with the board. The organisation is now helping its clients with a fresh zeal and renewed direction; it recently won an award as the leading not-for-profit in its field in Western Australia. TBH Niche is now working on measuring the organisation’s strategic performance.
Case Study 3 – Lotterywest funding for WA charity
It was a surprise for our client, a recently established West Australian charity, to discover that governments usually require not-for-profits to have a strategic plan before they will be considered for operational or asset funding. Luckily, TBH Niche was able to assist by drafting a successful application to Lotterywest for organisational development funding. Our client was granted $10,000 to fund the consultants of its choice to draft a strategic plan. Once their strategic plan is complete, they will be able to seek operational funding from the Commonwealth, State and Local Governments. Furthermore, their business operations have been strengthened by the strategic planning process, which has them firmly on track for success.
